Sometimes, change is a good thing.
And so it is with our organization. We’ve changed our name from International Friends of Belize to Full Basket Belize effective September 2012. We think our new name and identity better reflects our goals and our best attributes.
We’re still the same great group of folks dedicated to improving the education, health, and environment of Belizean communities through educational scholarships and small project grants. But we’ve decided to give ourselves a new name and logo. We hope you like them.
What is the origin of our new name?
Our new name of Full Basket Belize stems from the Belizean Kriol proverb, “Wan, wan, okra, ful baaskit.” This adage means that bit by bit, little by little, with perseverance, hard work, and cooperation, a basket can be filled. The image of growing and gathering okra suggests an activity that sustains a community. Our totally volunteer organization endeavors to fill its “basket” with donations to support Belizean communities.
What is the meaning of the new logo?
Not only do we have a new name but we also have a new logo. The prominent spiral shape shows the beginnings of a basket being woven, a reference to our new name of Full Basket Belize. The Maya people of Belize weave their baskets by starting with small coils and working outward, constantly connecting the fibers to themselves for support, until the baskets develop into things useful and beautiful.
Similarly, our organization started small and has worked outward over the past seven years. We began with just a handful of international friends of Belize and have gradually developed, with the support of our generous donors, into a larger and more effective organization supporting Belizean communities.
Is the mission changed, too?
No, our mission remains the same: to help improve the education, health, and environment of Belizean communities through educational scholarships and small project grants. Thus, Full Basket Belize will continue to offer secondary school scholarships to deserving students as well as small project grants in the areas of health, education, and the environment.
At present Full Basket Belize supports the education of 13 deserving students with BZ$1000 scholarships which pay for tuition, fees, books, and uniforms for the academic year 2012-13. We also sponsor annual grants worth BZ$2000 each to three different community groups throughout Belize. (We are now accepting applications for next year’s projects – see below for more information.) Over the past seven years, we have provided funding to every district in Belize and will continue to do so under our new name of Full Basket Belize.
What does the future hold?
While we will no longer use the name International Friends of Belize, our work will continue under our new moniker of Full Basket Belize. We are still the same great organization, just in new packaging.
We hope that you will continue to support our work or join anew. Please donate to our worthy causes by clicking on the DONATE button at the left.
